Drivers permit renewal? Can I take a "walk-in" test?

I've had my permit since march 2009. It's already past expiration date. I'm going to the DMV tomorrow for smog check. Could I also just walk in and take the permit test? Or would I have to have had set up an appointment online? I'm confused.
